Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

Bird Flu

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been detected in 2022 in several locations in Michigan in wild birds and backyard flocks.  In birds, the symptoms of avian influenza often appear suddenly and can easily spread through a flock.  The risk to people from HPAI is low.  It is safe to eat properly handled and cooked poultry and eggs as temperatures of 165 degrees and above kill bacteria and viruses including HPAI. Biosecurity measures such as preventing contact between domestic and wild birds, and washing hands as well as boots and other gear after coming into contact with birds can protect against the spread of Avian Influenza.

To learn the symptoms of avian influenza and to find out where it has been detected see the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development webpage.  https://www.michigan.gov/mdard/animals/diseases/avian/avian-influenza
