Undersheriff Anthony Stewart serves as the second-in-command for the Jackson County Office of the Sheriff, having been appointed by Sheriff Gary Schuette on November 10, 2025. A native of Lansing and a 1986 graduate of Everett High School, Undersheriff Stewart has dedicated nearly four decades to the principles of "Guardian" leadership and community service. His professional journey began in 1987 as a Corrections Officer with the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC), a path briefly paused in 1988 when he answered the call to serve in the United States Marine Corps. As an Infantryman, he developed the tactical discipline and executive grit that would become the cornerstone of his later leadership roles.
Following an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, he returned to the MDOC and began a steady ascent through the ranks. Over a distinguished 32-year tenure, he served across every custody level, eventually rising to the rank of Senior Executive Warden. During this time, he served in elite capacities including Assistant Commander of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), the Honor Guard, and as a Security Threat Group Coordinator. A defining achievement of his executive career was his appointment to develop the Central Booking strategy for the Detroit Police Department. Under his leadership, the project successfully resolved an 11-year Department of Justice consent decree in less than one year, earning him the MDOC Professional Excellence Award and the Governance Symbol of Excellence from Governor Rick Snyder.
Upon his retirement from the MDOC in 2019, Undersheriff Stewart transitioned into academia as an Adjunct Professor for Ferris State University and Jackson College, where he continues to instruct in the disciplines of criminal justice, business, and psychology. In 2021, he was appointed Jail Administrator for Jackson County, where he leveraged his extensive operational knowledge to modernize jail protocols and executive oversight. To further his evolution as a law enforcement professional, he enrolled in the Washtenaw Community College Police Academy in May 2025, where he was elected Class President and served as the Keynote Speaker for the September 2025 graduation.
Undersheriff Stewart’s commitment to his profession is matched by his dedication to community service. He has served on numerous boards and committees, including the Highfields Board of Directors, the Jackson YMCA Board of Directors, the Baker College Criminal Justice Advisory Board, and the Honorable Judge Susan Jordan’s Adult Treatment Court. His academic credentials include a Master of Public Administration from the Horace Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Siena Heights University, earning Summa Cum Laude honors for both.
Undersheriff Stewart has been happily married to his wife, Tina, for over 25 years. They are the proud parents of three children: Michael, Jasmine, and Anthony II.
